Travel Marmaris History

It is not known when Marmaris was founded, but it was called Physkos in the 6th century B.C. and was a part of the Carian Empire. According to the famous historian Herodotus, when the Carians settled in Mugla region, they also took over the town of Physkos. After 300 B.C., the Carian civilization lost its power and the area was ruled by different civilizations such as the Egyptians, Asstrians, Ionians and Dorians. In 138 B.C., Attalos III, the King of Bergama, made Physkos controlled from Rhodes by Roman generals.

In 1425, Ottomans conquered the area and built a castle in the city in 1521 AD. The Ottoman Empire Kanuni Sultan Suleyman changed the name of the city into Mimaris which eventually became Marmaris.
